The Dallas Stars plan on using one of the team’s two compliance buyouts on defenseman Aaron Rome after placing him on unconditional waivers.
Rome becomes an unrestricted free agent after the buyout.
Rome, 30, had one year remaining on a three-year, $4.5 million deal, and was scheduled to make $1.6 million next season. He will receive two-thirds of his remaining salary over the next two seasons, which comes out to $528,000 per year.

“We have a lot of young defensemen who are making a good push and we need to create room for them,” Stars general manager Jim Nill said, via the Dallas Morning News. “We’re not a cap team or a floor team, so it wasn’t necessary to do it this way. We just decided to take this path.”
Nill said Dallas has no plans to use the other compliance buyout. A compliance buyout does not count against a team’s salary cap, a rule instituted after the lockout in 2012-13.
Rome recorded had one assist and a minus-6 rating in 25 regular-season games for Dallas this season. He has six goals and 28 points in eight seasons with the Anaheim Ducks, Columbus Blue Jackets, Vancouver Canucks and Stars.
